Revolutionary drivetrain concept

PERFORMANCE REDEFINED

The drivetrain concept of the high-performance AMG.EA architecture is based on highly innovative electric motors, so-called axial flux motors, directly cooled battery cells, and a cooling concept designed for high-performance. In this combination, peak power is delivered impressively and can be called upon repeatedly and continuously. The capability of this technology was demonstrated last year with the spectacular record drive of the CONCEPT AMG GT XX in Nardò – 25 long-distance records were pulverised during its “around the world in eight days” drive. In this case, the revolutionary powertrain concept comprised three electric motors with a combined output of over 1,000 kW and a high-performance battery system. This system also enables rapid energy absorption and high power density in series production, guaranteeing a new dimension in performance.

Maximum performance capability

FORMULA 1®-BASED 800-VOLT BATTERY

The AMG High-Performance Electric Battery is a completely new development and a key element in reaching a new level of overall performance. Its development combines experience from the Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar, Formula 1®, and the know-how of the best engineers from Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach as well as Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) in Brixworth, England. The 800-volt battery concept is based on Formula 1® technology and uses directly cooled cylindrical cells with a special cell chemistry. This ensures uniform temperature distribution and high-performance capability, even under continuous load. As a result, the battery enables high and repeatedly available power, combined with fast energy absorption and high power density. The high-voltage battery can, for example, recharge the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupé enough energy for a range of 462 kilometres (WLTP combined)* in around ten minutes – enough to cover more than the distance from Affalterbach to Spa-Francorchamps. All of this guarantees driving pleasure at full pace and sprint performance over marathon distances.

*The figures are preliminary. There are currently no confirmed values from an officially recognised testing organisation, nor EC type approval, nor a certificate of conformity with official values. Deviations between the stated figures and the official values are possible.

Innovative drive

AXIAL FLUX MOTOR

The axial flux motors stand above all for one thing: the future of electric driving at the highest level. They also embody the next generation of pure AMG Performance. What sets them apart: axial flux motors are significantly more compact and more powerful than conventional electric motors. Their innovative development also makes them around two thirds lighter, requiring only one third of the installation space usually needed. This leads to high power density and for example in the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupé to an overall system output of up to 860 kW (1,169 hp). In contrast to conventional electric motors, the electromagnetic flux in an axial flux motor runs parallel to the motor’s axis of rotation. The key components are designed as thin discs. Two rotors enclose the stator like a sandwich on the left and right. This H-configuration enables optimal coupling of the electromagnetic flux generated by the stator’s electromagnetic field to the rotors. Or, simply put: a highly innovative drivetrain concept with maximum system output.

SPORTINESS AND COMFORT: AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL

The AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension is an air suspension with semi-active roll stabilisation and enables highly dynamic sports car handling as well as long-distance comfort. Body roll is significantly reduced, improving comfort on uneven surfaces. This enables improved precision in cornering behaviour while maintaining a high level of ride comfort. The basis is formed by triple-adjustable air springs as well as shock absorbers adjustable in rebound and compression stages, with semi-active, interconnected hydraulic elements that replace conventional anti-roll bars. A central pump and valves regulate roll support. During straight-line driving, the system can be fully opened to enable maximum comfort. Speed-dependent ride-height adjustment and rapid raising and lowering ensure added optimal adaptation and a precise driving experience. In addition, AMG RIDE CONTROL+ delivers strong performance in every driving situation. The extra-sporty suspension with multi-chamber air suspension offers a wide adjustment range between the most comfortable and the sportiest setting – for continuous optimisation depending on load and according to your preferences.

AMG DRIVER’S PACKAGE

The AMG Driver’s Package is an optional equipment package whose main feature involves raising the electronically limited top speed. The promise: even more dynamism. The reality: an increase in top speed from 250 km/h to 300 km/h*. To implement this increased performance safely and in a controlled manner, the AMG Driver’s Package includes the AMG high-performance ceramic composite brake system, which reduces brake fade, improves fade resistance under high load, and enables consistent braking performance – while also weighing less than steel brakes. This is complemented by wheel-arch cooling, which ensures maximum and optimal cooling and provides thermal compensation at high speeds and under repeated load. Overall, the AMG Driver’s Package stands for unlocking the full performance potential while safeguarding driving-dynamics stability.

*The top speed of 300 km/h can only be achieved with the optional AMG Driver’s Package.
