Developed by brilliant minds – crafted by master craftsmen

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is the second model in the highly exclusive Mercedes-Benz Mythos series – and delivers an uncompromising driving experience both on the road and on the racetrack. This high-performance coupé combines a 646 hp (475 kW) V8 biturbo engine with pure rear-wheel drive, significantly reduced weight and chassis engineering with a relentless focus on precision. Its dynamic capabilities are further enhanced by a unique wide-body design with wider tracks, extensive use of carbon-fibre components and purpose-driven aerodynamics. To this end, the road-legal high-performance coupé is built entirely by hand at AMG’s headquarters in Affalterbach to the highest manufactory standards.

A distinctly AMG vision


Dream meets reality

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung began with a simple question: how can a CLE be developed further towards maximum driving dynamics? On the initiative of a small team, the project first took shape as a prototype. The goal was not merely a list of individual performance enhancements, but a complete reimagining of the vehicle as an integrated performance system.

Based upon the current production coupé, a unique special build was created featuring increased power output, a purpose-tuned chassis, comprehensive lightweight construction and extensive body modifications. Compared with the production model, weight was reduced by around 170 kilograms, while the bodyshell itself underwent extensive modifications. The result is a vehicle rebuilt from the ground up to Affalterbach’s highest manufactory standards, laying the foundation for the model designation “Spezialanfertigung”.

Powertrain


AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with its model-defining 646 hp

At the heart of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung lies the extensively enhanced AMG M177 EVO 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine. We find its output of 646 hp (475 kW) reflected in the model designation. Maximum torque stands at 850 Nm and is available across a broad engine speed range from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. The engine’s flat-plane crankshaft reduces rotating masses, improves revving characteristics and promotes exceptionally agile throttle response.

A bespoke high-performance exhaust system delivers a distinctive and unmistakeable V8 soundtrack. Titanium reduces weight, whilst the cold-end design developed in collaboration with Akrapovic enhances performance. The standard AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission rounds off the intense experience with dynamic shifting and an emotion-charged rev-matching function.

Optimised driving dynamics and aerodynamics


Dynamic developments for the limit range

To achieve the exceptional driving dynamics of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, the bodyshell structure has been engineered to withstand the highest loads. Additional reinforcements and an integrated roll-over bar significantly increase bodyshell rigidity. Precision, stability and driver feedback benefit directly, particularly during spirited driving. To fully harness the car’s enormous performance potential, the aerodynamics were also developed with driving dynamics as the primary objective. The front diffuser, wing louvers, underbody aerodynamics and rear wing combine to create a carefully integrated aerodynamic package.

The manually adjustable front diffuser features “Street” and “Race” modes. The latter makes use of the Venturi effect, noticeably increasing front-axle downforce. The result is exceptional straight-line stability and precise steering feedback, both in corners and at high speeds. Open louvers integrated into the widened front-wings improve wheelhouse ventilation and contribute to additional downforce. A particular innovation is the channel system positioned next to the headlights, directing airflow through the wheel arches and out through the louvers. Front flics mounted on the sides of the front apron further optimize airflow and brake cooling.

Bespoke dynamic driving features


Specially designed – specially crafted

As its name suggests, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is full of unique, bespoke features. This high-performance coupé transmits its power exclusively to the rear axle, reducing weight and fundamentally shaping its dynamic character. The electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential, for example, supports controlled drifting, while the Launch Control system has also been specifically calibrated for rear-wheel-drive. The result: from 0 to 200 km/h in 11.4 seconds.

The suspension has also undergone further optimisation with a clear focus on driving dynamics. It features a steel coil over suspension system, which enables exceptionally precise tuning to suit driving style, circuit and intended use. At the heart of the suspension is four-way adjustable damper technology with independently configurable low- and high-speed rebound and compression settings. This allows the suspension setup to be fine-tuned for a wide range of driving requirements.

The AMG Ceramic High-Performance Composite Braking System is engineered for extreme loads and delivers consistently high braking performance, even under the intense demands of circuit driving. The completely redesigned brake-cooling system featuring large air intakes in the front bumper and dedicated axle airflow-guiding, significantly improves heat dissipation.

Dynamic Design


Performance-driven design language

The distinctive and exceptionally sporty appearance of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is characterised by its wide-body design, which has been engineered with uncompromising focus on maximum driving dynamics and performance. Extensive modifications to the bodyshell increase structural rigidity, creating the foundation for the vehicle’s exceptional performance potential.

A key element of the concept is its significantly wider stance. To achieve this, the bodyshell has been reinforced and widened. The result is an additional 60 millimetres of vehicle width at both the front and rear axles. This enhances stability, increases cornering potential and enables the use of exceptionally wide wheels and tyres.

In addition, numerous standard components have been replaced by carbon fibre solutions specifically engineered for demanding use on road and track, further emphasising the vehicle’s highly dynamic appearance.

Purist Interior


Dedicated lightweight construction for greater driving dynamics

The interior of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung follows the same unwavering focus on lightweight construction and driving dynamics. The rear seats have been removed, along with the acoustic insulation. In their place, lightweight carbon-fibre door panels and ultra-lightweight high-end racing bucket seats with pronounced lateral support are fitted as standard, along with a roll-over bar that increases torsional rigidity, further enhancing driving dynamics of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung.

In pursuit of the most direct driving experience possible, infotainment and other features have also been reduced. The removal of various drive modes and assistance systems has also enabled the number of controls on the AMG Performance steering wheel to be reduced. The steering wheel itself remains unchanged, and thanks to its DINAMICA microfibre covering and motorsport-inspired flattened shape, continues to provide exceptional grip and control in every driving situation.
