The garage is an underrated space. That’s why we spoke to architect and designer Marcel Heller to discover how to make it the perfect home for your AMG.

We spoke with Marcel Heller, an architect and designer who, together with his team, is responsible for AMG's architectural presence. As an AMG driver and enthusiast, he also believes in elevating the room in which one's beloved car is usually parked. Allow us to show you how to create such a space and where you can find the right inspiration.

Bye-bye, storage room vibe...

A typical garage, which measures about 30 to 40 square meters, can be reimagined as additional leisure room. This is especially useful at a time when residential space is becoming increasingly expensive and home offices are not the exception but the rule. To ensure your garage not only fulfils its function but also suits your AMG and lifestyle, it's worth seeking some professional advice before getting down to business. "A window with a view of the greenery, decorative elements or cool staged lights - there are countless ways to win this area for yourself", says Heller. He often draws inspiration for his designs from online magazines or other architecture and design studios. Here, the work of well-known car photographers also provide a spark.

Be bold: Give your garage an identity

Already inspired and ready to give your AMG a new home? AMG, regardless of the model, stands for strong character and self-confidence. Anyone who drives one knows it's not just a means of transport, but an expression of personal feeling. This lust for life and the design that goes with it should also be reflected in your car’s resting place. "The mix of bold and expressive, luxury and performance, is what AMG is all about for me," says Heller, when being asked about the brand's design DNA. For the interior, make use of authentic, high-quality materials. Don't hold back: materials such as concrete and steel combined with bold colors and daring forms give the room its identity.

In the spotlight: The garage as a stage for your AMG

It doesn't take too many modifications to show off the car in all its glory. For example, you can say goodbye to standard ceiling lights, which in many garages consist of two neon tubes. More closely resembling the light in a dentist's office, they won't bring a smile to anyone's face. You'd be much better off going with six to eight purposefully positioned spotlights. The interplay of light and shadow, achieved by different light cones and customizable brightness settings, place your car centre stage. Depending on the design and color of your car, the lighting allows you to create a brilliant aura. Colored LED lights or dimmable lights are always a good bet.

The floor: it's all about quality

Less is more when it comes to the floor. Choose high-quality and preferably sustainable subfloor materials, such as screed or concrete. The so-called terrazzo, often found in the entrance halls of magnificent mansions built at the turn of the century, is a particularly beautiful floor option. This tried-and-tested flooring is a type of mastic asphalt that can be sanded down to provide a beautiful surface grain and elegant definition. It owes its durability and classy look to the use of different types of stone such as granite, marble, limestone, and river gravel, all of which can be sanded or polished to your liking. There's also something to be said for asphalt screed. Its matte sheen doesn't compete with the vehicle's paint, nor does it reflect light in a bothersome way.

High-quality flooring materials combined with exposed concrete and complementary lighting can offer a tasteful balance between luxury design and raw materials that is ideal for AMG's stylistic approach.

New materials: Sound insulation made from mushrooms

Like in most sectors, the topic of sustainability when it comes to interiors is no longer a trend but an integral part of high-quality design. "We recently received a sample of an acoustic insulation derived from mushrooms and which can be processed without artificial adhesives. The material is 100% recyclable and sustainably produced. There are some really cool new ideas out there. The greater the demand, the more incentive for manufacturers to bring these concepts to market," says Heller.

Keep it simple: Clean and tidy is the way to go

Keeping your space clean and tidy is key to creating an environment in which you can be productive and also kick back once the work is done. More importantly: the fewer the distractions, the bigger the pedestal for your car. An AMG can withstand extreme temperatures and weather conditions, of course, but your garage as a "me space" is all about making it homely. A reliable rule: Rid yourself of anything that hasn't been used in the last six months. Put up some classified ads, ask your friends, and away it goes.

The future of driving: Smart garages

Garages can do much more than house your car and offer a space for you to enjoy. Most people are now familiar with the term "smart home," which refers to integrating modern technology into one's living space. Not only does it save energy, it also allows for plenty of external control: setting the temperature before entering the house, keeping an eye on the security system, or regulating irrigation in the garden. Data plays a key role in this digitization, and there's no reason to leave out the garage. One suggestion is to control the lighting and heat conveniently from the palm of your hand using a smartphone.

Smart garages play an increasingly important role when it comes to electric or hybrid automobiles. For example, we can check the battery charge while brushing our teeth in the morning, preheat the car in winter, evaluate data from our most recent drive, and, last but not least, adapt our driving behavior to suit our individual needs and sustainability goals.

AMG Drivers just wanna have fun

In addition to smart gadgets, handy tools, and luxurious design, having fun is a huge part of upgrading your garage – whether it's in the form of a popcorn machine, mini bar, work station, or car simulator. There should be no limits to creativity in this room. Can you imagine anything better than racing one of your favourite tracks in the presence of your own beloved AMG? "You can create this feeling in your garage by installing two widescreen monitors," says Heller. "It can also be fun for the whole family, from playing video games to settling in for a movie in your garage theatre."
