Friends and family were stunned when Debra Bennett got herself a sports car. The AMG fan needed the adrenaline to balance out her family life and career. Even a lack of experience on the racetrack was no obstacle for her.

You can dismiss the platitude ‘to dare something new’ as just that: a platitude – or you can take your life into your own hands and baffle friends and family by venturing into completely new territory. AMG fan Debra Bennett had the courage to do the latter. When Debra realised that, in addition to family and career, she craved a little more thrill, she made a bold decision. She bought a brand-new car, paid in cash and thus began a new phase in her life.

But what do you do when you have just fulfilled a lifelong dream with an AMG sports car, but you don't quite trust your own driving skills? It's simple: build a private driving simulator for your home before getting serious and driving the car around the racetrack. It's the stuff of daydreams and feel-good movies. “I want to move people”

Mike Shinoda is no stranger to Mercedes-AMG. From building his own motor to creating the sound of driving performance, the musician accompanies the world’s fastest family for a while now. So, when we told him all about the third episode of AMG Uncovered feat. Debra Bennett, he wanted to contribute and compose the soundtrack. But where do you start with such a task? In a short interview, he gives us some insights.

Private Lounge: How would you describe the sound of AMG?

Mike Shinoda: Hard first question! The loud roar of a rocket ship in the distance, behind the soft creaking of artisan-crafted leather, maybe?

PL: What was your approach to composing the music for this episode?

M: One thing that I think ended up being interesting was the idea of age without playing with clichés. Debra’s story had to do with age, so I liked hearing the classic feel of the piano up against the cutting-edge synth instruments to really highlight her strength.

PL: What does AMG stand for in your eyes?

M: At its core, AMG is a performance brand. But it’s also known for innovation and design and setting standards. There’s an aspirational significance about the brand.

PL: What do you think unites the world of music and the world of cars?

M: My connection with AMG has always been about craftsmanship and performance. We both agonize over the details to make something special, something that moves people.

PL: Debra Bennett mentions in the episode that she wanted more from life after retiring. What would your dreams for the future be?

M: My new single “Happy Endings” is about creating your own future—even if it’s just in your mind. There’s an irreverent sense of playfulness in the song, which is how I feel about looking ahead. I’m hopeful to explore lots of different ideas and collaborations, and excited for the possibilities of the future.
