OVERVIEW

Introducing the new SL 63 AMG roadster – a manifestation of the results of years of knowhow, emotional performance and cutting-edge engineering. In the high-performance roadster segment, there is nothing to compare to its combination of tangible driving dynamics, superior sportiness, unique high-technology and low

For the first time, the SL 63 AMG is constructed almost entirely from aluminum and weighs up to 140 kilograms less than its predecessor. Its highly rigid all-aluminum bodyshell provides the basis for agile, sporty handling that has been taken to an entirely new level, coupled with exemplary roll characteristics and
ride comfort.

And, as you would expect from AMG, the SL 63 AMG delivers the kick-in-the-pants performance and driving dynamics unmatched in the luxury roadster class. Equipped with the newly developed AMG V8 biturbo engine, featuring a peak output of up to a heart racing 410 kW (557 hp) and 800 Nm of torque, anyone that talks about the new SL 63 AMG is bound to be talking about the ultimate in passionate, refined motoring. Not to mention a vastly improved fuel consumption of 9.9 liters per 100 km (NEDC) -- an improvement of 32 percent compared with the
previous model.

CLASSIC SL PROPORTIONS

The designers have brought the latest generation of the SL unmistakably to life on the basis of tradition but added new perspectives and visions. The result is a stylishly sporty and elegant luxury sports car with the classic hallmark SL balanced proportions: the long bonnet gives way to a compact passenger compartment that is set well back. A wide, powerful rear end giving the impression of raciness provides the finishing touch. A handful of elaborately styled lines define the powerfully sculpted and yet calm surfaces of the flanks. Finely worked details, a striking rear end as well as ventilation grilles with chromed fins from the dynamic traditional Mercedes-Benz design heritage visually emphasize the SL legend.

All ALUMINUM Construction

Intelligent lightweight construction is one of the major factors behind the low fuel consumption figures. The
SL 63 AMG is based on a lightweight all-aluminum bodyshell similar to that of the SLS AMG super sports car. Compared to the outgoing model, this design not only delivers a significant weight saving of around 110 kilograms, it also greatly enhances rigidity, safety and comfort. Intelligent lightweight construction also means that the components have been optimized in line with their specific purpose. Various types of processing are used for the aluminum components, for instance, which are produced as permanent mould castings or vacuum die castings before being processed into extruded sections or used as sheet aluminum with varying wall thicknesses. The result is high rigidity, high safety and improved vibration characteristics. For the cover behind the tank, the designers use even lighter magnesium material in some cases.

Retractable Hardtop Roadster

The sixth-generation SL retains the space-saving, electro-hydraulically retractable vario-roof, enabling the SL to be transformed into a roadster or a coupé, as the mood takes the driver and depending on the weather, in under 20 seconds. In contrast to the outgoing model, there are three versions to choose from for the new SL: painted roof, glass roof or the unique panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. Its transparency can be switched to light or dark at the push of a button.

Powering Above Expectation

At the heart of the new SL 63 AMG is exactly what you would expect: a potent powerplant, created by AMG masterminds in Affalterbach, Germany.

The specifics: an AMG 5.5-liter V8 twin turbo engine with a displacement of 5461 cc. This engineering marvel generates a maximum power output of 386 kW (525 hp) and 700 newton meters of torque as a standard, but in conjunction with the AMG Performance package, these values rise to a show stopping 410 kW (557 hp) and 760 newton meters.

Additionally, the SL 63 AMG is packed with true sports-car performance: acceleration from zero to 100 km/h takes 4.3 seconds and 4.2 seconds respectively, while the top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited). With or without AMG Performance package, the NEDC fuel consumption figure of 9.9 liters per 100 kilometers remains the same.

AMG 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo Engine

The eight-cylinder powerplant with the abbreviation M 157 features a combination of innovative high-tech components for high power output, and it delivers exemplary, low fuel consumption. In addition to spray-guided direct petrol injection, the engine boasts an all-aluminum crankcase, twin turbochargers, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air/water intercooling, alternator management and an ECO Start-Stop function. The weight-optimized AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes produces a distinctive engine sound.

Transmission

The AMGSPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission combines the best of both worlds: the sporty, direct and agile responsiveness of a manual transmission and the maximum comfort of an automatic transmission. Equipped with seven gears, four driving modes, a double-declutch function and a RACE START function, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission excels with previously unattained flexibility. MCT stands for Multi-Clutch Technology, and indicates that gear changes are executed solely by the clutch components.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission has four modes to select from: "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual). In "C" mode, the ECO Start-Stop function is active at all times and switches off the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is at a standstill. Plus the transmission characteristics are tangibly soft, with smooth and early gear changes. Second gear is generally used as the starting gear in this mode.

The engine and transmission are far more agile in "S", "S+" and "M" mode; in addition, the stop/start function is deactivated. In "S" mode the engine and transmission respond much more immediately, with more revs in each gear and faster downshifts. Gearshifts are also around 20 percent faster than in "C". Changing to driving mode "S+" shortens this time by a further 20 percent, while "M" provides the most sporty mode of all: the transmission shifts the gears 10 percent faster – corresponding to a 50 reduction versus "C" mode. In "M" mode the gear changes take only 100 milliseconds.

Partial suppression of the cylinders proves perfect for a committed driving style: briefly and precisely interrupting ignition and injection under full load leads to even faster gearshifts than before. A welcome side effect of this is the emotive sound impression. An automatic double-declutching function for downshifting and the RACE START function are also included as standard with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

AMG Performance Package

The impressive performance of the
SL 63 AMG can be heightened and visually accentuated even further with a wide range of special features from the AMG Performance Studio. Highlights include the AMG Performance package with 20 kW (27 hp) more rated output and 100 Nm more torque, as well as the AMG Exterior Carbon-Fiber package with solid carbon-fiber trim, and distinctive red brake calipers, which adds a look of sportiness when viewed from any angle.

Getting behind the wheel of the
SL 63 AMG infuses the soul with a feeling that must, simply, be experienced to be understood. The bark of the V8 biturbo engine upon ignition; the tangible force of the high torque engine pushing you back in to your seat upon acceleration; the self-assuring suspension response that limits the roll of the vehicle going through a curve that implores you to push harder. THIS is what AMG Driving Dynamics enables. In the high-performance roadster segment, there is nothing to compare to its combination of tangible driving dynamics, superior sportiness, unique high-technology and low fuel consumption.

Transmission

Power transmission can be adapted to specific requirements, as the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission has four modes to select from: "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual).

AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control

The lightweight-design measures are not just limited to the body of the
SL 63 AMG, however, as the steering knuckles and spring links on the 4-link front suspension and almost all of the multi-link independent rear suspension components are made of aluminum. The reduction in unsprung masses enhances both agility and the response of the spring and
damper components.

Mercedes-AMG is remaining faithful to the ABC active spring and damper system: the new SL 63 AMG is equipped with an enhanced version of the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control as standard. During the design, development and testing phases, the focus was firmly on driving dynamics and performance. Exceptionally sporty characteristics with reduced roll angles and firm body damping ("Sport") or more comfort-oriented settings for a high level of comfort on long journeys ("Comfort") can be selected at the push of a button. To enable greater agility and faster cornering speeds, the SL 63 AMG has more negative camber all round and fully revised elastokinematics.

Equipped with the new, electro-mechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, the flagship AMG model impresses with its fleet-footed, agile cornering and exceptional feedback at the critical limits. The steering has a constant and more direct ratio, and variable power assistance which adjusts in line with the suspension settings. Further standard equipment includes 3 stage ESP®, a specialty exclusive to AMG with "SPORT Handling" mode for particularly keen drivers, while options available from the AMG Performance Studio include an AMG rear axle differential lock and AMG performance suspension.

The Electronic Stability Program ESP® is the perfect partner for the high performance of the SL 63 AMG. The 3-stage ESP® with a sports function provides three individual settings and is the logical development of the AMG ESP® philosophy. The driver can choose between the settings “ESP ON”, “ESP SPORT Handling Mode” and “ESP OFF” by pressing the ESP® button in the AMG DRIVE UNIT – the activated setting is shown in the central display in the AMG instrument cluster. In “ESP ON” mode, any tendency for the vehicle to become unstable is countered by braking intervention at one or more wheels, as well as a reduction in engine torque.

Briefly pressing the ESP® button activates “ESP SPORT Handling Mode”. In this mode, the selective braking intervention and accompanying reduction of engine torque allows higher dynamic forces to occur, for example corresponding angles of drift – and the driver of the SL 63 AMG benefits from even more driving pleasure. The functions of ESP® are fully restored when the brake pedal is operated.

Longer pressure on the ESP® button activates “ESP OFF”. In this case there is no dynamic control intervention and the engine torque is not reduced – with a further increase in driving enjoyment. “ESP OFF” should only be used by experienced drivers on private racetracks. In this mode too, operating the brake pedal restores all the functions of ESP®. ESP® traction logic is active in all three modes. Should a driven wheel begin to spin, specific braking intervention practically duplicates the effect of a mechanical differential lock, enabling the engine power to be transferred to the road even more efficiently.

Newly developed AMG high-performance compound braking system

Maximum performance is also a top priority when it comes to braking: the newly developed AMG high-performance compound brake system features 390 x 36 mm compound discs with six-piston fixed calipers at the front and 360 x 26 mm integral discs with single-piston floating calipers at the rear. An electric parking brake is fitted as standard, while options available from the AMG Performance Studio include red-painted calipers to denote the AMG Performance package and the even more high-performance, weight-optimized AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system as seen on the SLS AMG.

Design: stylish, superior, dynamic

As the latest addition to the AMG Roadster family, the flagship
SL 63 AMG V8 model displays the hallmark styling elements of a superior high-performance car from Affalterbach: the dynamically distinctive AMG bodystyling comprises the front apron with large air dams, AMG-specific LED daytime running lamps and a lower cross strut in silver chrome. Among the particularly eye-catching features are the new AMG radiator grille with a double louver in silver chrome, the side sill panels and the "V8 BITURBO" logos on the vent grilles with fins in silver chrome. At the rear, the AMG spoiler lip, the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system and the diffuser-style rear apron with body-colored insert draw the design to a fitting conclusion.

Interior: a feast for all the senses

The SL 63 AMG interior is inspired by the SLS AMG and offers a feast for all the senses: the four air vents styled like jet engines, the E-SELECT lever and the AMG DRIVE UNIT are all reminiscent of the super sports car. Standard equipment includes AMG sports seats in nappa leather with a unique V8 seat upholstery layout and AMG badges in the seat backrests, a multicontour function and seat heating as well as AMG carbon-fiber trim, AMG illuminated door sill panels, ambient lighting and an IWC-design analogue clock. One of the stand-out details on the AMG performance steering wheel is the AMG logo in the lower metal insert. The sportily designed AMG instrument cluster provides a wealth of information and includes a TFT color monitor, AMG start-up display, AMG main menu and RACETIMER. Outstanding material quality and high-caliber workmanship underline the attention to detail paid by the Mercedes and AMG experts.

AMG light-alloy wheels

The SL 63 AMG leaves the factory fitted with five-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, shod with 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 19 rear tires. Multi-spoke AMG forged wheels from the AMG Performance Studio with 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 20 rear tires – also available in matt black including a rim flange with a high-sheen finish – help to reduce the unsprung masses.

Lighter, more efficient, and fuel consumption reduced by 30 percent.

Less means more

With a NEDC fuel consumption of 9.9 liters per 100 kilometers, the new
SL 63 AMG is 4.2 liters more economical than the preceding model. This represents a 30 percent reduction in fuel consumption -- despite an increase in power output.

Also contributing to the improved efficiency of the SL 63 AMG is the overall reduction of weight with vehicle construction. For the first time the SL 63 AMG has an all-aluminum bodyshell. Only very few components consist of other materials. The result: the new aluminum bodyshell weighs around 110 kilograms less than the steel technology used in the previous SL 63 AMG.

The result is perceptible and measurable -- less weight means more dynamism and less consumption; the motoring enjoyment increases, and the environmental burden sinks.

ECO Start-Stop function: a standard feature

The Controlled Efficiency ECO Start-Stop function is fitted to the
SL 63 AMG as standard. This system is permanently active in the consumption-optimized "Controlled Efficiency" (C) driving mode. Once the driver comes to a halt e.g. at a red traffic light or in a traffic jam, the engine is automatically switched off. Once the brake pedal is released or the accelerator is depressed, the engine is immediately restarted and the car is able to move off quickly. Intelligent technology guarantees a comfortable and immediate starting procedure: a crankshaft sensor which recognizes the direction of rotation registers the resting position of all eight pistons. For an automatic engine start, the cylinder with the most favorable piston position receives an injection of fuel into its combustion chamber. The precise piezo-electric injectors greatly assist this process, as they make particularly fast starts possible.

The engine management ensures that the engine is only switched off if certain preconditions are met. The starter battery must have sufficient charge, for example, and the engine must be at the necessary operating temperature for efficient emissions control. The same applies to the interior temperature selected by the driver: if this has not yet been reached, the engine is not switched off when the car comes to a stop. The onboard network management system makes sure that active audio, telephone or video functions are not interrupted by the stop/start function.

A green "ECO" symbol shows the driver when the stop/start function is active. Should one of the above criteria be preventing activation of the system, this is shown in the central display by the message "Start/stop inactive" and a yellow "ECO" symbol. In the more performance-oriented driving modes "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual), the start/stop function is always deactivated.

Controlled Efficiency drive mode

During its development and adaptation to the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine, the AMG engineers paid special attention to the new driving mode Controlled Efficiency ("C"). The emphasis was on delivering minimum engine speed coupled with a reduced number of gearshifts in all driving situations. When moving off in "C", the MCT transmission always selects second gear and shifts decidedly early to the next higher gears if the driving style permits. At 60 km/h for instance, sixth gear will already be engaged – not only improving fuel consumption but also noise levels. Thanks to its powerful, readily available torque even at low engine speeds, the AMG V8 biturbo unit is absolutely ideal for this style of driving. Controlled Efficiency also means convenient gearshifts and a "soft" accelerator response set-up for outstandingly smooth power transfer.

The eight-cylinder biturbo engine also features a generator management system: whenever the engine is on the overrun or when braking, kinetic energy is used to charge the battery rather than being wasted as heat in the usual way. In all other operating modes a combination of onboard network and generator management enables the generator to be kept at a low voltage. This reduces the load on the engine and makes for fuel savings.

Intelligent lightweight construction with carbon fiber

The engineers at AMG go even further with weight saving materials integrated into the vehicle. The rear lid, for example, helps to further trim the weight. With an inner support made from lightweight carbon-fiber composite, the extremely rigid carbon-fiber component is bonded to the plastic outer shell, resulting in a weight saving of five kilograms compared to a conventional rear lid. This raft of innovative lightweight-design measures means that, at an EC curb weight of 1845 kilograms, the new
SL 63 AMG is 125 kilograms lighter than the model it replaces.

MAGIC SKY CONTROL

When light it is virtually transparent, offering an open-air experience even in cold weather. In its dark state the roof provides welcome shade and prevents the interior from heating up in bright sunlight. The frame of the three roof versions is made of magnesium, making the roofs around six kilograms lighter than the roof on the predecessor, thus providing a lower centre of gravity for the vehicle and, in turn, better agility.

Magic Vision Control

MAGIC VISION CONTROL is a new, intelligent and highly efficient wipe/wash system. The innovative wiper blade concept always applies the washer fluid just in front of the wiper blade lip via the channels integrated into the blade – in both directions of wipe. As a result, no water is splashed onto the windscreen during spraying to disrupt the driver's visibility, while at the same time cleaning the windscreen perfectly. The water also remains on the windscreen, thus ensuring it is cleaned without troubling the occupants, even with the roof down. For the first time a fully heated wiper blade is available as an option that prevents snow or ice from forming on the blade in winter. This heating function also allows warm water to be applied directly onto the windscreen for the first time, even in
cold temperatures.

PRE-SAFE® System

As an option DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control and PRE-SAFE® Brake, which is already well proven in other Mercedes-Benz models, are available. Both work on the basis of the same radar sensors. Once a serious risk of a rear-end collision is detected, the PRE-SAFE® Brake warns the driver initially and can initiate autonomous braking if the driver fails to react, and so either prevent the accident or at least mitigate its severity. PRE-SAFE® can also activate occupant
protection measures.

The stage is set for the new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG. The new version of the high-performance Roadster impresses on several counts: systematic lightweight construction, a boost in output and driving dynamics, and 30 percent lower fuel consumption and emissions. Thanks to an all-aluminum bodyshell, similar to that of the SLS AMG super sports car, the vehicle weight has been reduced by 125 kilograms. With a kerb weight of 1845 kilograms and an output of 395 kW (537 hp) or 415 kW (564 hp), the new model has the perfect recipe for unparalleled dynamism and a superior driving experience.
