Four Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3s to compete in Bathurst twelve-hour race

  • Affalterbach (GER). With a strong line-up of four cars, AMG Customer Sport Teams intend to build on the achievements from previous years in the Bathurst twelve-hour race (7 February). The Erebus Motorsport team runs a pair of SLS AMG GT3s in the race in Australia and is among the favorites. The classic endurance race, not too far from Sydney, also serves as the season opener of the Intercontinental GT Challenge, held for the first time in 2016.

Next to local hero David Reynolds (AUS), Nico Bastian and Thomas Jäger will be racing the SLS AMG GT3 with starting number 36. The two Germans know the demanding and undulating track in New South Wales very well. In 2012, Jäger scored a podium finish there straight away. In the following year, the AMG driver scored the maiden win for an SLS AMG GT3 in the Bathurst twelve-hour race with Erebus Motorsport.

With Bernd Schneider (GER), another former winner of the popular endurance race in the south-east of Australia will be on the grid. The AMG driver is sharing the second Erebus Motorsport gullwing with Maro Engel (GER) and Austin Cindric (USA). The trio will be driving the car with starting number 63.

Another SLS AMG GT3 run by Mishumotors has Mirco Schultis (GER), Renger van der Zande (NED) and Patrick Simon (GER) as its drivers. Dean Grand (AUS) and Ash Samadi (AUS) will be racing the fourth gullwing, entered by Garth Walden Racing.

This year’s running of the classic endurance race in the south-east of Australia also marks the start of the Intercontinental GT Challenge. Next to the race in Bathurst, this championship, organized for the first time by SRO Motorsports Group, includes the 24-hour race of Spa (BEL), the Sepang 12 Hours (MAL) and a six-hour race at Austin in Texas, USA.

The ‘Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour’ gets underway on 7 February at 5:45 hrs (local time). In Germany, the start of the race can be watched at 19:45 hrs on Saturday evening. The official event website ( includes a live stream and live timing.

Jochen Bitzer, Head of AMG Customer Sports: “The AMG Customer Sport Teams have a very strong line-up for this year’s twelve-hour race in Bathurst. The past years have shown that the SLS AMG GT3 is able to battle for top positions at Mount Panorama Circuit. Thanks to the Intercontinental GT Challenge, this year’s race is of particular significance.”
